Good Neighbors
Number of players: 1
Type of Dominoes Used: Double 12
Type of Game: One player game

Object of the game: To pair up and remove all the dominoes but one.

Keeping the tiles in a facedown position, draw 12 from the deck and place them in three horizontal rows of 4 tiles per row. Now, turn them faceup in place. This is your tableau.

You may remove from your tableau pairs of tiles that are "good neighbors" "Good neighbors" are tiles that are next to each other (including diagonally) and have matching ends. (At least one end of one tile has to have the same number of pips as at least one end of the other tile.)

On each turn, remove at least one pair of "good neighbors." (You may remove more than one pair if you like.) In this layout, there are several "good neighbor" pairs to choose from: 6-1 + 12-6; 9-12 + 12-6; 9-12 + 12-3; 3-2 + 3-1; 32 + 5-3; and 9-3 + 3-1.

When a pair (or pairs) is removed from your tableau, this leaves empty spaces. All the remaniung tiles should be moved towards the upper left-hand corner of your tableau. This is done first by moving any remaining tiles having one or more empty spaces to their left, over to the left, filling in that space (those spaces). Then move tiles from the left-hand side of the middle row up to the right-hand side of the top row and tiles from the left-hand side of the bottom row up to the right-hand side of the middle row. After this is done, draw tiles from the deck and place them in the empty spaces of the tableau, left to right, and top to bottom, making your tableau once again, 3 horizontal rows of 4 tiles per row.

Example: Let's say you remove the 3-2 + 3-1 and 6-1 + 12-6 from your tableau. Move 0-0 over to the left; bring 9-12 up to the top row; move 12-3 to the left; bring the bottom three tiles up one row; pick 4 new tiles from the deck and place them, left to right, on the bottom row.

In this way, pair, remove, and fill-in repeatedly. You lose the game any time you are "stuck" and have no "good neighbors" to remove from your tableau.

Variations: This game may be played with a double-9 set, in which case your tableau should be 3 horizontal rows of 3 tiles per row. The object is to remove all dominoes but one when playing with a double-9 set.

Or you may play this game with a set of double-6 dominoes, with a tableau of two horizontal rows of 6 tiles per row. The object when playing with a double-6 set is to remove all dominoes
